Can You Sleep in Earrings? The Honest Answer
Share
Yes, you can sleep in earrings, as long as your piercing is healed and the pair is low-profile and secure. There is a second half almost nobody gives you.
Ask this online and you get a lecture about your ears. Nobody tells you what nightly pillow contact does to the jewelry.
So here are both: what it does to your ears, and what it does to the plating.
Can you sleep in earrings? The short answer
Two verdicts, plainly:
- Healed piercing, small studs. Fine for your ears. Not free for the finish.
- Hoops, drops or anything that dangles. Take them out. They snag, twist and press.
Our position has not changed: take them out at night. What follows is why, so it reads as a choice and not a rule.
First question: what sleeping in earrings does to your ears
If your piercing is fully healed, a small secure pair is usually uneventful. Three things cause most of the trouble.
Pressure is the first. Side sleeping pins the earring between your lobe and the pillow. A taller or heavier piece can leave a sore spot. Snagging is the second. Hoops and dangles catch on hair and sheets. Residue is the third, and it is the easy one to fix. See how to clean earrings.
If your piercing is new, irritated or painful, a piercer or doctor can advise. That part is not ours to answer.
Second question: what a pillow does to your earrings
This is the half nobody writes, and it is the half that costs you.
Cotton feels soft against skin. Against a plated surface, it is less soft. Every time you shift in the night, the pillowcase drags across the gold layer. That runs for six to nine hours, and it repeats every single night.
Repetition is the whole problem. You can skip the gym. You can take a piece off before the shower. Nobody skips sleeping.
One night is nothing. Worn every night, that is 365 sessions of low-grade abrasion a year. Occasional wear and nightly wear are not the same habit.
The wear does not spread evenly. It starts at the high points, the parts that meet the fabric first:
- The outer curve of a hoop, where it rests against the pillow.
- The raised edge of a stud face.
- The back of the post, pressed between your lobe and the fabric.
You will not see anything in week one. What shows up first is a slight dulling, as though the piece is due a polish. Polishing brings back some shine. It does not bring back gold already worn off.
The word for this is burnishing. It is friction wear, not chemical damage, and a different thing from tarnish. For the tarnish side, and how long a vermeil finish lasts, read does gold vermeil tarnish.
Sleeping in a pair is not a harsher exposure than a swim. It is a much smaller one that never stops. That is what makes it add up.
The other daily exposures are covered in can you shower with gold vermeil jewelry. The rule there is last on, first off. Sleep is the fourth exposure, and the only one that never gets a night off.
Why plating thickness decides how long it takes
Our pieces use 4ยตm of 18K gold over solid 925 sterling silver. The industry standard sits closer to 1ยตm to 2ยตm.
What that buys you is margin. There is more gold to wear through before the sterling underneath shows.
What it does not buy you is immunity. Thicker plating is still plating. Friction does not care how many microns are in its way.
Which earrings handle a night best, and worst
Shape decides most of this. Low and flush wins.
| Earring shape | Overnight verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Small studs | The best of imperfect options | Light, flush, nothing to catch on |
| Larger hoops | Take them out | They twist, bend and snag |
| Drops and dangles | Take them out | Most snag risk, and joints wear |
| Ear climbers | Take them out | More surface meets the pillow |
Backings matter too. We compare push, screw and flat backs in gold stud earrings for everyday wear.
The pair in our range that handles it best
The Resilience Interlock Studs ($99) have a flat front face and a standard post back. They are suitable to wear while sleeping. That is a spec answer, not a marketing one.
Here is the qualifier that belongs in the same breath. Suitable means comfortable and secure. It does not mean the finish is exempt. A flat face gives the pillowcase less to catch on. It is still gold against cotton for eight hours.
If you are going to sleep in them anyway
Plenty of people will. Five things that reduce the damage:
- Wear the lowest-profile pair you own. Nothing that hangs.
- Use a smoother pillowcase. Silk or satin reduces friction. It does not prevent wear, and no fabric will.
- Alternate the side you sleep on. Otherwise one ear takes it every night.
- Wipe them in the morning. A dry, soft cloth. No soap, no dips, no ultrasonic cleaners. Full routine on our jewelry care page.
- Put a dish on your nightstand. Removal costs seconds when there is somewhere to put them. See how to store jewelry to prevent tarnish.
What the warranty covers, and what it does not
Our 12-month plating warranty for Canadian customers covers premature plating wear. Two exclusions apply here. Normal wear and tear is one. Improper care or storage is the other, and that page defines it to include friction burnishing.
So no. Wear-through from sleeping is not covered. We would rather say so here than at a claim.
That exclusion is the clearest argument for the habit. The warranty exists for a finish that fails when you did nothing wrong. Taking your earrings out keeps you on that side.
The short version
Your ears will probably be fine. Your plating will not be, over time.
Take them out. It is the cheapest thing you can do for a pair you want to keep.
If you want a pair that makes the habit easy, the Resilience Interlock Studs sit flush and come out fast. You can see the rest of the earrings we make, or read the care guide first. Free shipping in Canada over $99, and free on your first order.
FAQ
Is it bad to sleep in earrings every night?
For a healed piercing and a small, secure pair, it is usually fine for your ears. It is harder on the jewelry. Nightly wear means six to nine hours of pillow friction, with no days off. That repetition shortens the finish.
Does sleeping in earrings damage gold vermeil or gold-plated jewelry?
Over time, yes. Fabric rubbing a plated surface wears the gold at the high points, such as the edge of a stud face. It shows as dulling first. Thicker plating takes longer to wear through, but no plating is immune.
Can you sleep in hoop earrings?
We would not. Hoops snag on hair, sheets and pillow edges. They can twist or bend under the weight of your head. The outer curve takes the most friction of any shape.
Will my piercing close if I take my earrings out at night?
It varies by person, and by how long the piercing has been there. We will not give you a number. A piercer can tell you what is normal for your ears.
Does the plating warranty cover wear from sleeping in my earrings?
No. Our 12-month plating warranty for Canadian customers covers premature plating wear. Normal wear and tear is excluded. So is improper care or storage, which the warranty page defines to include friction burnishing.
