What to Wear to Your Own Graduation

Most graduation jewelry guides skip the most specific part: the gown.

For two to four hours, you are wearing a floor-length academic robe. It determines what shows, and therefore what actually matters to choose. You have probably already sorted out what you are wearing underneath. This is the part that comes after that.

This post covers the ceremony: what shows, what the hood does to your necklace, the stage walk, the diploma handshake, and the dinner after. Written for the graduate, not the guest.

What the Gown Actually Covers (And What It Doesn't)

The gown covers you from shoulder to ankle. The academic hood (the coloured piece that identifies your degree and faculty) drapes over your shoulders and rests at your upper chest.

What remains visible throughout the ceremony:

  • Your face, framed by the mortarboard and the gown's neckline
  • Your earrings
  • The front gap of the gown, roughly the first six to eight inches of whatever you are wearing underneath

That front gap is where a necklace might appear. Everything else is covered.

Earrings are the primary decision. Everything else is either covered by the gown or depends on the hood.

A quick note on Canadian gowns. At most Canadian universities, the gown is black. The colour is in the hood, a lining visible at the front gap that identifies your faculty and degree level. At Dalhousie, white for a BA; at NSCC, navy blue; colours vary by institution and degree. Gold and silver both read cleanly against the black base and against any hood colour.

The Necklace Question

A necklace can work at convocation. Whether it shows depends entirely on how your individual hood fits and pins.

The hood's front "V" sits at approximately throat level, and the gown hangs open with a gap at the front. Depending on how your specific hood is sewn and where it pins, the same necklace can be fully visible in one hood and completely hidden in another. The only reliable approach: put on the gown and hood before the day and look.

Earrings show regardless of what the hood does. If you have a necklace you love, test it with your actual gown. If you are buying something new, earrings first.

The Journey Flow Necklace adjusts between 16″ and 18″. At one setting it may fall in the visible gap; at the other it may sit behind the hood's band. Worth testing with your specific gown.

What Jewelry to Wear During the Graduation Ceremony

This is the central decision, with two distinct moments inside it.

For the Stage Walk and Seated Ceremony

The stage walk is about 30 to 60 seconds of being visible to hundreds of people from a distance. From the audience, earrings frame your face below the mortarboard. What works: pieces that stay secure, do not swing or jingle as you walk, and catch light enough to show in a photo from a distance.

Studs are the reliable choice for the ceremony. They frame the face, stay still through a long ceremony, and show up clearly in photos from a distance. The Resilience Interlock Studs ($99 CAD) have an interlocked two-ring design with a single CZ, enough detail to catch light from across the room.

Ear climbers work if you want something more distinctive that still won't move. The Own the Room Ear Climbers ($109 CAD) follow the curve of the ear rather than hanging below it. Nothing swings or dangles. They sit flush and read just as well in a close portrait as from the back of a hall. For more on how they wear, see how to wear ear climbers.

The Diploma Handshake Photo

This is the official photograph, the one taken as you receive your degree. The frame is close-up on your face and upper body, so your earrings are in it. For most people this is the one ceremony image they keep.

A 4µm 18K gold vermeil piece catches light in a close-up without looking theatrical. On gold vermeil and skin during extended wear, does gold vermeil turn skin green covers the details.

Ceremony vs. After: A Quick Comparison

Piece During the Ceremony After the Gown Comes Off
Own the Room Ear Climbers Secure, non-dangling, statement from a distance — works for the stage walk No swap needed — carries through dinner
Resilience Interlock Studs Universally secure, face-framing, photograph well at a distance Elegant at dinner — add hoops or a necklace for more
Journey Flow Hoops Can move during a long seated ceremony Natural choice for dinner — adds movement and warmth
Journey Flow Necklace Test with your actual gown first — visibility depends on your hood Fully visible and intentional once the gown is off

What Changes When the Gown Comes Off

After the ceremony, the gown goes back. Your full outfit is visible. This is dinner, family photos, and the images you will look at for years.

If you wore studs to the ceremony, this is when you add hoops or swap. The Journey Flow Hoops ($85 CAD) add movement for dinner. A necklace that might have been hidden under the hood is now fully visible. The Resilience Interlock Necklace ($109 CAD) works well here. It carries the same motif as the studs and fits the occasions after this one.

If you wore ear climbers through the ceremony, you do not need to swap. Own the Room carries through dinner without a change.

One earring for both moments, then figure out the necklace when the gown comes off.

Attending as a guest, not the graduate? The decisions look different. Graduation ceremony jewelry as a guest covers that perspective.

Fall Convocation in Canada

Canadian fall convocation runs in October and November. The logistics are specific to the graduate.

The gown-room hour. Before the ceremony, you change into the gown, usually in a classroom or hallway, while also managing a coat, a bag, and your family texting you from outside. Whatever you are already wearing at that point should be easy to manage. Nothing fragile that could snag or tangle when you pull the gown on.

Ceremony light vs. outdoor photos. The ceremony hall is usually warm indoor light. Post-ceremony family photos are frequently outside, grey October or November light in most Canadian cities. Gold reads warmer than silver in grey outdoor light. Worth keeping in mind when you move from a warm ceremony hall to grey outdoor family photos.

The all-day earring question. The earrings you chose for the ceremony are the same ones in the coat-and-dinner photos afterward. Pieces that look intentional at close range and from a distance are the practical choice on a day that keeps moving.

The Pieces Worth Buying, If You Are Buying

If you are buying something for this day, buy something you will wear past it.

4µm 18K gold vermeil over 925 sterling silver is four times the standard plating thickness. It holds up over years of wear, nickel-free throughout, which matters when you are in earrings for most of a day.

The earrings you choose for graduation will get used again: interviews, important dinners, occasions that come after this one.

One Thing to Do Before the Day

Try on your earrings with the mortarboard and gown before the ceremony.

The mortarboard tassel swings forward as you move. Long dangle earrings can catch it during the stage walk or when you sit and rise. Studs and ear climbers sit close to the ear, so there is nothing to catch.

Also confirm your earring backings are secure before the day. A long ceremony with repeated sitting, standing, and walking is not when you want to discover a loose one. Studs have a simple fixed backing. Ear climbers follow the curve of the ear and sit flat against it, so nothing shifts during a long ceremony either.

Frequently Asked Questions

What jewelry actually shows under a graduation gown?

Earrings are the most visible piece throughout the ceremony. The gown covers your body from shoulder to ankle; the academic hood can obscure a necklace depending on how it fits and pins. Plan your jewelry around earrings first, and test any necklace with your actual gown before the day.

Does the academic hood cover my necklace?

It depends on your specific hood. The hood's front "V" rests at approximately throat level, and the gown hangs open with a front gap. The same necklace can be clearly visible in one hood and completely hidden in another based on individual fit and pinning. The only reliable approach: put on the gown and hood before the day and look. Earrings show regardless of what the hood does, which is why they are the main decision.

What earrings won't fall off walking across the stage?

Stud earrings and ear climbers are both reliable for a long ceremony. Studs stay in place throughout hours of sitting and moving. Ear climbers follow the curve of the ear rather than hanging below it, nothing swings or dangles, and they stay flush through the stage walk. Avoid long drop earrings that could catch on the mortarboard tassel or shift as you move.

What should I wear to the graduation dinner after the ceremony?

When the gown comes off, your full outfit is visible and you can do more with jewelry. If you wore studs to the ceremony, this is when you add hoops or swap earrings. A necklace that was hidden under the hood now has room to show. Think of it as a separate moment: the celebration version of the same day, with more room for your own style.

Is gold or silver better with a black graduation gown?

Either works against the black base. The deciding factor is your hood colour. Most Canadian university hoods add a warm-coloured lining (white, navy, gold, scarlet) at the front gap; gold vermeil complements these naturally. If your hood has a cooler-toned lining, silver works as cleanly. Gold vermeil reads warm and polished at ceremony-photo distance.

Can I wear jewelry at my Canadian university convocation?

Check your specific institution's convocation attire page before the day. Most Canadian universities restrict additions to or over the gown itself (pins, sashes, cords, and emblems attached on top) rather than personal jewelry worn on the body. NSCC explicitly welcomes beaded jewelry and cultural accessories. When in doubt, check with your convocation office. Personal earrings are standard at the vast majority of Canadian institutions.
